The inspiration behind Paul Hopman's scratchboard art.
Scratchboard. What a fun medium!
Creating scratchboard art is similar to using pen and ink. With pen and ink, you apply black ink to white paper. With scratchboard, you use a white board that’s covered with black ink and use a small scratch tool to etch into it, revealing the white. Color is then added with fluorescent chalks and inks to archive a natural look.

Colors can be applied with pastel chalk
Different strokes are used to bring out the detail. Short lines for fur are used here.
Progress continues as more scratches and color is add.

Try Scratchboard Yourself
With our scratchboard starter kit and video training series, you can create your own scratchboard works of art, whether you are a budding beginner or an accomplished artist. Scratchboard art has many benefits to children and adult a like. It provides family engagement and creativity. You simply scratch off a layer of ink to reveal a world of imagination!
Art is great for kids, but with the decline in school arts programs all over the country, student access to the arts is limited. We want to make sure that the budding artist (kids and adults) realize their creative potential and have the tools to use them.
